    Catching Hearts

    Eric Bowers

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 9/17/2017

When we take a leap in life and put our hearts out into the world in new or bigger ways—sharing a song, dance, or poem, writing a book, competing at a sporting event, giving a speech, and so on—there is greater potential for aliveness but also for shame and pain

    Mary Mackenzie

  4. Compassion

    Compassion

    Mature, Astute & Courageous

    Rachelle Lamb

    Articles · 10 - 15 minutes · 1/14/2019

Getting "feel good" empathy can become an addiction. Even to the point of seeing people who don't offer empathy as "not being NVC". Rachelle urges us to notice how this view of NVC can be seductive, and even dangerous. In this article, she explains how we can expand our compassionate awareness when we go beyond equating NVC with harmony and empathy. She asks us to become more open to noticing others' experiences even if it challenges our personal and collective belief systems -- and especially when it upsets us to consider it.

  5. NVC Conversations About Privilege and Power-Over

NVC Conversations About Privilege and Power-Over

    Dian Killian

    Articles · 9 - 14 minutes · 1/31/2019

Some people in the NVC community consider the words "privilege" and "power" triggering and/or evaluative. From this perspective, how can the concepts of "privilege" and "power" be considered part of the NVC teaching?  This writing piece examines the power and privilege debate.  It also discusses what the author sees as Marshall Rosenberg and Gandhi's stance on the subject...

  6. It’s All About Please and Thank You

It’s All About Please and Thank You

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 8/3/2019

Trainer Tip: People’s choice of words may be difficult to hear. In fact, we may feel downright aggravated by them. Whether we enjoy these statements or not, we can begin to recognize that behind each statement is a desire to meet needs, either by saying please or thank you. In this way, we are more likely to feel compassion because we have connected to their humanness. Listen for the please or thank you in your conversations today.

  7. Acknowledging Our Inner Critic

    Acknowledging Our Inner Critic

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 9/21/2019

Trainer Tip: Our inner critic judges ourselves and other people; and it is the most likely to get scared when we begin to make a change. It holds wisdom for us if we are willing to listen. When we acknowledge our inner critic and empathize with its need, we gain insights into ourselves and we clear the way for resolution.

  8. The Power of Being Heard

    The Power of Being Heard

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 9/27/2019

Trainer Tip: To defuse anger and create space for resolution, hear the other person’s feelings and needs. If this practice is new to you, you're like to experience fear and resistance in trying it out. However, you'll be more likely to experience a powerful shift, and build your capacity, if you try it anyways.

  9. Clarifying Our Needs

    Clarifying Our Needs

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 11/2/2019

Trainer Tip: We often find ourselves slipping into old behaviors that we would rather change. This is because we don’t have a new plan for responding to the same old situations. In that case, notice whether you are slipping into old behaviors today. Connect to your unmet needs and then identify a new strategy for the situation.

  10. Using Anger to Serve Life

    Using Anger to Serve Life

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 2/29/2020

Trainer Tip: Sometimes we need to empathize with a person before he can hear our anger. Consider that all anger is an expression of an unmet need. If we focus on the need, rather than the actions, we are more likely to connect compassionately with other people. Be aware of opportunities to empathize with someone’s anger today.

    Opening to Intimacy

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 2 - 3 minutes · 12/1/2020

Trainer tip: Do you have behavioral patterns that block intimacy? When we are feeling our most vulnerable, we often want intimacy but also tend to keep it at bay. Acknowledge your need for intimacy, and find people you can trust to love you as you are.

  12. Honesty Is the Key

    Honesty Is the Key

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 4/6/2021

Trainer Tip: In Nonviolent Communication, we see expressing honesty as a gift of our authenticity, and a chance for others to support us in getting our needs met -- this can flourish and deepen our relationships. We can notice and act on opportunities to be honest with the components of OFNR (Observations, Feelings, Needs, and Requests).

  13. Self-Empathy Regulation Process

    Self-Empathy Regulation Process

    Eric Bowers

    Practice Exercises · 30 minutes · 8/10/2021

Building your body and mind awareness can help you better regulate/calm your emotions.  Regular self-empathy will help you better regulate your emotions as well as increase your body and mind awareness.  If you are not aware of amygdala activation (fight/flight/freeze response), you will react instead of responding with choice. Use this eight-step process to develop your self-empathy/regulation skills.

  18. How To Know If Someone Has Been Heard

How To Know If Someone Has Been Heard

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 6/11/2022

Trainer Tip: People tend to look, act, and sound softer when they have been more fully heard. If you're unsure whether someone has been heard and you want to be cautious, you may ask them, “Is there anything else you’d like me to hear?”. If you try to reason with or educate them before they're heard, they'll likely respond negatively. After they're heard, you may notice a willingness on their part to listen and proceed.
