How can NVC be more effectively applied when responding to situations that involve extreme violence?
One Ukrainian NVC trainer has been exploring answers to this question, and is here to share them with you.
Meet Kateryna Yasko, an organizational psychologist, certified NVC trainer, and conflict mediator from Kyiv, Ukraine. In March, 2022 she and part of her family were forced to abandon their homes and move to Vilnius, Lithuania due to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
As a Ukrainian NVC trainer, she began observing the NVC community’s response to Russia's invasion into Ukraine. This was her observation:
“At times it was painful to see certain responses, as they were so incongruent with my own embodied experience of having to flee a war-zone and see my country being violently attacked. It made me realize that the NVC curriculum, despite its focusing on human needs and compassion, does not prepare us well to respond to situations that involve extreme violence.”
With this realization, Kateryna reached out to friend and mentor Auke van Nimwegen to create a course with her. Auke is an expert in Spiral Dynamics— a model and language that offers more understanding of human nature, different worldviews, and conflicts both on a personal and geo-political level.
This 4-week course will introduce the Spiral Dynamics model and use it to study the evolution of human needs, values, and life conditions. You will also study the geo-political situation in Europe that has led to the invasion of Russia into Ukraine.
You will come away with:
A good understanding of NVC and at least some experience in the application of NVC is needed. Instruction in NVC will not be offered. If you have any doubts, reach out to Kateryna Yasko by email:
