  1. Saying Thank You without Judgment

    Saying Thank You without Judgment

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 1/24/2021

Trainer tip: From the NVC perspective, everything someone says or does is either a “please” or a “thank you". In our culture, saying “thank you” usually involves an appreciation in the form of judgment or evaluation. Remember, whether we judge someone as good or bad, judgments and evaluations can create disconnect or tension. Instead, notice how their actions have enriched life, and what feelings it stimulated.

  2. Interdependence vs. Dependence/Independence

    Interdependence vs. Dependence/Independence

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 1/15/2021

Trainer tip: NVC consciousness recognizes interdependence. In this process each person is autonomous; everyone's needs matter; people have choice and responsibility for their actions; there's abundance, and a valuing of coming together. The dependence / independence paradigm assumes we either need someone else to be whole -- or we don’t need others at all. Commit to living autonomously. Notice where you struggle with this.

  3. Defining Enough

    Defining Enough

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 12/16/2020

Trainer tip: If you have a goal, want to be a "success", or want to do "your best', define what that would look like, and how much. Identify one goal and one thing you can do today to achieve that goal and do it.

  4. Life-Alienating Communication

    Life-Alienating Communication

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 2 - 3 minutes · 1/6/2021

  5. How to Express Feelings

    How to Express Feelings

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 12/22/2020

Trainer tip: Feelings of hurt, anger, fear, and resentment can often sound alike. Fear and excitement have the same physiological effects on us, and are often expressed in the same body language. Clearly and specifically naming our emotions and the intensity level can help us resolve conflicts, with a much greater opportunity to get our needs met.

  6. Enjoying the Jackal Show

    Enjoying the Jackal Show

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 2 - 3 minutes · 12/31/2020

Trainer tip: Be aware of your inner jackal chatter today and make a commitment to listen for the underlying needs they are trying to tell you about.

  7. Opening to Intimacy

    Opening to Intimacy

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 2 - 3 minutes · 12/1/2020

Trainer tip: Do you have behavioral patterns that block intimacy? When we are feeling our most vulnerable, we often want intimacy but also tend to keep it at bay. Acknowledge your need for intimacy, and find people you can trust to love you as you are.

  8. Connection, Connection, Connection

    Connection, Connection, Connection

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 2 - 3 minutes · 11/22/2020

Trainer tip: Do you get into “right fights”? You know you’re in one when you’re arguing with somebody in order to be right or because you want to win. What needs do I hope to meet from winning or being right? Notice if you enter into a right fight today and shift your focus to your needs and connecting with the other person's needs.

  9. Differentiating Needs from Strategies

    Differentiating Needs from Strategies

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 2 - 3 minutes · 11/13/2020

Trainer tip: When we focus on needs further possibilities are more likely to open up. When we focus on a particular strategy, our world can feel scarce and conflicts can arise. Resolution comes when we value everyone’s needs and seek mutually satisfying solutions. We can ask for support towards this outcome.

  10. Demands vs Requests

    Demands vs Requests

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 2 - 3 minutes · 11/4/2020

Trainer tip: Demands are more likely to limit the possibilities and create distance between people. The trick to asking something as a request is valuing everyone’s needs equally. When you value everyone’s needs equally, then you are more willing to come to solutions that satisfy everyone. It thus opens possibilities and helps build connection.

  11. Expressing Appreciation

    Expressing Appreciation

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 2 - 3 minutes · 10/17/2020

Trainer tip: When you want to thank someone expressing what that person did, how you felt about and what needs were met for you, can provide the other person with more information. It can also help her more fully understand how she contributed to you, and deepen your connection with her.

  13. The Three Stages of Emotional Liberation

The Three Stages of Emotional Liberation

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 9/29/2020

Trainer tip: Read on for the three stages of emotional maturity. In the third stage, we integrate the first two stages. We come to realize that everyone is responsible for their own feelings, but we also recognize our role if we do something that stimulates pain in another person. We also start to value the needs of everyone, rather than just one party's needs over the other.

  14. Comparing Ourselves to Others

    Comparing Ourselves to Others

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 8/6/2020

Trainer tip: Comparisons are a form of judgment. The minute we compare ourselves to other people, we are setting ourselves up for pain and discouragement. We are setting them up too, and erecting a barrier between ourselves and them. Instead, notice how you feel about other people’s assets or foibles, and what needs come up for you. Read on for more.

  15. Understanding Judgments

    Understanding Judgments

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 9/20/2020

Trainer tip: Whenever we judge someone else in any way, we create a barrier and distance between us and the other person. Instead, consider shifting from judging other people to awareness of how their behavior affects your feelings and needs. This can make a profound difference in your ability to live peacefully. Read on for more.

  16. Evaluations vs. Feelings

    Evaluations vs. Feelings

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 9/11/2020

Trainer tip: Beware that your expression of feelings helps you own how you feel, rather than blaming the other person for doing something you see as wrong. Expressing your feelings helps the other person know how deeply this issue affects you. Plus it can bring more clarity and connection to all parties. Read on for more.

  17. Trainer tip: People often presume why something happened before checking with the other person. Instead, if we were to name the facts of what happened through observation without adding in our own judgments or reasons why we think it happened, we can more easily open the possibility for deeper connection with the other person. Read on for more on making observations.

  18. Empathy Doesn’t Mean Agreement

    Empathy Doesn’t Mean Agreement

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 8/24/2020

Trainer tip: Empathy is about being present to a person’s feelings and needs. It is acknowledging another’s experience, not necessarily agreeing with it. If you have a different opinion than another, empathize with her first. Then, state your feelings and needs with regard to the situation.

  19. Valuing Everyone’s Needs

    Valuing Everyone’s Needs

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 8/15/2020

Trainer tip: If you are in a relationship (whether personal or work related) that you are not happy with, consider talking to the other person in an effort to connect about both your needs. 20. Liberating Ourselves from Our “Shoulds”

    Liberating Ourselves from Our “Shoulds”

    Mary Mackenzie

    Trainer Tips · 1 - 2 minutes · 5/2/2020

Trainer tip: When you tell yourself that you have to do something, you're more likely to disconnect yourself from the needs you’re trying to meet, and also diminish the joy in your life. Instead, experiment with translating your “shoulds” and “have tos” into the need you are trying to meet.
