Full Description
This class will be very practice focused. You will have a chance to work with real situations from your life and practice:
- observing your thoughts/judgments and clarifying the need(s) they are expressing or trying to meet
- connecting your feelings to your needs
- differentiating needs from “strategies,” i.e. the specific ways we might want to meet our needs
Nonviolent Communication can be described as a “language of life” and a “language of human needs.” Needs (such as security, love, honesty, trust) are a way to put into language the life that flows within us, connecting us at a universal level where we human beings all have the same needs, are all part of same Life, and are all striving to meet them in the best ways we know in each moment.
The class will also offer a perspective on connecting with needs as a spiritual practice. In this perspective there is the practice of shifting from thinking to awareness, from over-attachment to form to resting in the formless and universal (pure connection).
Additionally, we will touch on how focusing on needs naturally leads to life serving action. When our attention is on needs (ours and others) our actions tend to be motivated by the enjoyment of contributing to them, to wellbeing for ourselves and others, and to the beauty and play of enriching life. Thus, a language of needs helps create the quality of connection that inspires what NVC founder Marshall Rosenberg calls “compassionate giving and receiving.”
Prerequisites: Beginner level NVC skills.
